Deckbuilders: the audience wants depth, not more cards

Roguelike deckbuilders are crowded — but the mixed-rated ones fail for a reason the leaders solved years ago. That gap is still open.

The deckbuilder shelf looks full. Look closer and most of the mixed-rated entries are making the same mistake, and it isn't a lack of content.

The complaint under the complaints

Reviewers say "not enough cards." What they mean, read in aggregate, is "not enough decisions." A bigger card pool with shallow synergies reads as padding; a smaller pool with real archetypes reads as depth.

The opening

  • The fantasy is proven — this audience will happily buy a fifth great deckbuilder.
  • The failures are design-legible: weak synergy, unreadable enemy intent, runs that overstay.
  • None of that needs a big team. It needs a tuned one.

The leaders proved the ceiling. The mixed-rated middle is where the unbuilt better version is still sitting.
